Good Reads, Thank You, and a Giveaway!

I told you last week I only read children’s books in April. That’s not completely true.

I also read two great eBooks.

In my suspicion of new technology (Hubs says I was born in the wrong century), I avoided the e-reader for a good while. Now, I am an evangelist for the Kindle lending library via Amazon Prime.

It’s like magic, people. Books on loan for free, in seconds.

Good Read #1

How She Does It

Also magical is when eBooks are on sale–for free.  Such was recently the case for How She Does It by Anne of Modern Mrs. Darcy. I snapped it up and read it in one sitting.

Completely appropriate title, because I am always wondering how Anne “does it:” She writes daily, runs a fabulous blog, home-schools and takes care of her four kids, works outside the home a bit, and cooks for a family with food sensitivities (read: this can be hard).

She’s also one of the most intentional people I know.

Her book is completely relatable, practical, and non-overwhelming. It’s not a call to “do it all,” it’s a flexible roadmap for doing what’s best for you and your family.

And there’s encouragement in it for everyone: for stay-at-home moms working on their passion in the cracks of the day, moms who work part-time, and those who work outside the home full-time.  Grab it here.

Good Read #2

Escaping Reaction, Embracing Intention

Meet the other most intentional person I know: Jacey from The Balanced Wife.

Jacey reminds me of my husband.

When I first met Hubs, I casually mentioned maybe, possibly, if I felt like it, running a mini-marathon–sometime. After we’d been dating a couple weeks, he had already created a training program for me, paid my entrance fee, and joined me in some runs.

Like Hubs, Jacey is a doer, in the best sense of the word.

In Escaping Reaction, Embracing Intention, she takes the popular phrase ‘living intentionally’ and makes it both more important and more practical.

By pointing out what we’re missing when we live a life of reaction, she shows how intention is essential for our relationships, work, and general well-being.

By offering simple strategies for overcoming particular roadblocks, she makes living intentionally totally practical.

Check it out here.

Thank You & A Giveaway!

In celebration of A Simple Haven reaching 300 Facebook likes (hey, it’s a far cry from the 30 I started with) and Springtime (!!!) and to say thank you (really, thank you!) for spending time at my little online home–

I’m giving away a copy of book I’ve been eagerly awaiting for months!

nesting place

The Nesting Place blog has always been a huge source of homemaking inspiration and encouragement for me. She basically had me at “it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.”

Wise and liberating words.

Now, Myquillan (a.k.a. The Nester) distills all of her homey wit and wisdom into one lovely (hardback, with pictures!) volume.

It comes out next week and I would love to send you a copy! Just use the Rafflecopter form below to enter to win. Earn more entries by completing more options!

  • Krista

Hello. Just found your blog. I’m glad to join your crusade against the rampant overuse of the apostrophe. And I’d like to add that it’s actually a misuse of the apostrophe! Thanks for the book giveaway.

    • Krista, you are right :). I’ve kind of used them interchangeably, but it really is misuse. You just. see. it. everywhere. Glad to have you on board! I’ll let you know if I ever make t-shirts promoting our cause. 😉

  • Caryn

Just found your blog from Nester. Looks like my kind of place, can’t wait to start reading!

  • I loved How She Does It, read it in basically one sitting and want to read it again. Along with Jacey’s book. I need some good books for on my kindle (app).

    Celebrating with you. XO

  • Heather H.

I am a first timer here! I am Heather (halloweenheather around the web) from I am a homeschooling momma to 4 daughters, wife to a tall, dark & handsome man, a crafter, photographer, gardener, baker, writer and I am a Mormon! I will save your blog to my favorites and come back to visit again!

  • Paige

Just found you, but like what I see so far and will be back!

  • I can’t wait for this book. The Nester was the very first blog I started reading way back when. Her message of imperfectionism liberated me and I’ve been mistreating windows and hacking up walls ever since.

    • Yes! It was my first blog too. And ditto on the rest. To be honest, I was such a perfectionist that when I first read her motto, I was like, “really? it doesn’t??” 🙂

  • Just too cool! I just know that Nester’s book is going to more than a simple something that stays perched on a coffee table. Can’t wait!

  • sarah ash

Came over via Nester. Hi, and would love to win a copy of the book!

    • Oh Jen, your pics are beautiful! I’ve always wanted to visit your neck of the woods, but so far have only made it as far north as NY. We’re going to Canada and Maine this summer, though, so I’m hoping to make a quick stop in Boston on the way home :).

      Thanks for stopping by!

First time on your site. Saw your post on simple bites and I am always looking for good reads to fill my summer break. Noticed that you live in a part of the country that is very near to my heart…green rolling fields and blue sky, ahhh. Will be checking back and thank you for the chance to win the book.

    • I love that this part of the country is dear to your heart! I have to admit that it has not yet worked its way into mine. 🙂 But there are things to appreciate here so I try to focus on those, especially when I miss Texas :).
