If you want to open your home more, take baby steps. Don’t start with baby’s first birthday party or hosting dinner for a family of eight.
Invite your neighbor over for coffee or a few girlfriends for a girls’ movie and dessert night. Hospitality does not necessarily equal huge fancy dinner party.
Think potluck, dessert and coffee, or ordering pizza. Or make dishes you’re familiar with.
Keep decor to a minimum (think candles and good music).
Share Your Favorites
What do you love to eat or make? Is it grilling? Desserts? An ethnic dish? Share what you love with others.
Some of my favorite memories of meals shared are my first taste of Indonesian food made by friends, Thanksgiving potlucks where everyone brought their signature dish, and grill enthusiasts sharing their love of meat.
Do What’s Natural
What activities do you enjoy–crafting, sewing, scrap-booking, a good movie, reading, watching football?
(I’ll be honest, I almost couldn’t type that last one, it’s such a foreign concept to me. Sorry, football fans).
So just invite friends to join you in doing those things. Host a crafting night where everyone brings whatever project they’re currently working on. Do a girls’ movie night. Start a monthly book club.
Look for the Needs
Consider who in your life might be encouraged by an invitation to dinner. Maybe a new family on your street, at school, or at church? A couple who is going through a hard season? Some college students who might enjoy a home-cooked meal?
Remember: think no-fuss, natural, and generous.
